The association also has limited partners and service providers as members, and Flip Fantasia is excited to be the newest associate member.

“We are excited about this membership, and we look forward to servicing growth companies with scalable business models in a way that also benefits their investors,” says Emmi Vainionpää, CEO of Flip Fantasia.

Private equity-backed companies grow 8 times faster in revenue and 20 times faster in employee numbers.

Flip Fantasia is ready to join to support PE-backed companies to grow faster, and offer companies - and their investors - new ways for smart scalability.

What If Being An Artist Was a Profitable Business?

What if we could celebrate the intersection of art and commerce and support talented artists?

What if we could figure out ways to do it?

We believe in the transformative power of beauty and the importance of arts and culture for the world.
We also believe in sustainable and responsible business practices.

It's a common call for corporations to embrace greater social responsibility, prioritizing arts and culture in their strategies and expenditures. We agree and do it too.

Our founder Karolina Santa’s art is displayed in many of our clients’ walls.

But in order for creative work to be sustainable and responsible, it also needs to be economically sustainable.

To say it bluntly: artists need to make money.

Saddle up your unicorns and join us for the ride to add more art and color to the world. When we create new business models, we can support corporate social responsibility and enhance economic sustainability for artists.

We are launching our Art As A Service offering in Autumn 2023. We are opening our own “office as an art gallery”, Flip Fantasia Talo, for everyone to visit during Helsinki Design Week, which is the most significant design platform in the Baltic region. But before we fast forward, let’s look back.

The Current State of the Global Creative Economy

Let’s look at the current state of the creative economy, and what global and local challenges we are facing at the moment - and why now is a good time to disrupt it.

As of writing this, even Hollywood screenwriters are on strike, demanding fair compensation for their creative work. The timing kind of makes sense, for example, ChatGPT and AI in writing have taken big developmental leaps and they are commercially available for anyone.

Digitalization and technology were supposed to save creative industries. And yes, they have created many new business models and democratized the art world by bypassing the traditional gatekeepers and sales venues, and digital art is here to stay.

The shortly-lived metaverse and the NFT boom, and blockchain introduced new opportunities for artists. Digital authentification and managing intellectual property rights on blockchain all of it sound very smart, but most of the NFT market was driven by hype, not actual added value, and it is still difficult for artists to guard their copyrights.

Whereas NFT enthusiasm has cooled down, phygital art is here to stay.

Phygital art is a combination of physical and digital experience or art, and many artists and most art galleries have already offered a version of it. For example, your physical art piece can work like a QR code and be scanned with a tool like Arilyn creating a secondary experience, or the artwork to come alive.

Photo: Immersive Klimt exhibition.

You have probably seen or heard of the artwork of famous artists like Van Gogh, Kahlo, Picasso and Klimt come alive in immersive exhibitions combining digital images and sound.

The Covid pandemic was one of the drivers for cultural and creative industries to turn into digital experiences, but money didn’t follow many of the creators.  EY’s Rebuilding Europe report states that digital income did not compensate for the loss of physical income for creators.

According to a 2022 report from UNESCO, a total of 10 million creative jobs were lost globally in 2020 alone as a result of the pandemic, and we are still feeling the aftermath.

The cultural and creative sectors account for 3.1% of the world’s GDP and 6.2% of all employment, making them a “strategic investment for economic development” according to UNESCO.

UNESCO’s report offers several recommendations to better support creatives, and corporate spending is one of them.

See? Even UNESCO wants artists to make money, not just Flip Fantasia.

In Europe, the importance of cultural and creative industries is even bigger, it employed over 7.6 million people before the pandemic, with €643 billion in revenue, representing 4.4% of the EU GDP. And the creative industry took a bigger hit in the pandemic than the tourism industry did.

EY's approach to boosting economic growth in the creative industries centers on three pillars: increasing funding and private investment, establishing a supportive legal framework, and harnessing creative talents to drive societal and environmental change in Europe.

What about here in Finland?

A survey among artists and creative workers conducted in Finland in August 2020 (RUUSUVIRTA & al, 2021) found that every tenth artist planned to switch careers in 2020 because of the loss of working opportunities and loss of income.

Currently, the cultural sector employs approximately 130,000 people in Finland. The government proposed a strategy for how it can support the vitality of arts and culture and its economic growth and impact on society. The reality is that many Finnish artists suffer financially, and for many seeking grants and residencies, or even government aid is the best or only way of getting income.

Don’t artists break boundaries all the time? What makes financial boundaries so different?

Art is a muse for creativity. Beauty inspires and creates a ripple effect. Art makes us think and rethink. We want to believe art inspires happiness.

Then why do we have this myth that the artist should suffer?

It's time to challenge this misconception.

Artists should be paid for their work, and commercial and cultural art can coexist harmoniously. Expecting artists to create without financial income is not sustainable or responsible.

And isn’t one of the missions of an artist to create something new? To break boundaries and dare to break myths and misconceptions?

Then why can not we collectively as a creative community decide that we together can break the myth of art only being valuable when it is created for the sake of passion from the point of financial suffering?

Another aspect is categorizing artists by their education and overlooking those artists who are self-taught. These ‘outsider artists’ are not included in the mainstream art world, yet they are often breaking the boundaries and how to create art that also is economically sustainable.

The traditional art establishment sees commercially successful artists like Banksy, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, and Damien Hirst sometimes as outsiders, because they challenge the conventional notions of art - including how much money artists should make (when they are still alive).

We like outsiders too.

Diversifying income streams, utilizing online platforms, commercial collaborations, licensing, renting, and offering teaching or workshops are practical ways for artists to thrive while contributing to culture and society.

What if we could celebrate the intersection of art and commerce and support talented artists?

What if we could figure out ways to do it?
